What is IB?
To help us begin the year, I’d like to explain a few elements of IB, or International Baccalaureate. Please check out our video designed to help answer the age old question, “What is IB?” Click here for the video.
- Seth Swihart, Assistant Principal for Academics, and I work in tandem to support our Matador IB community.
- This community includes ALL students, ALL classes, ALL teachers, and ALL parents. We are all IB learners, and there is no “IB track” or “IB academy” at JT Moore.
- We are part of a continuum that includes Julia Green Elementary (Primary Years Program, or PYP), JT Moore (Middle Years Program, or MYP), and Hillsboro High School (Diploma Program and Career Certificate Program).
- Students do not have to be part of IB at previous or future schools to be an IB learner at JT Moore.
- IB at the middle years level is not a set curriculum. Teachers design instruction to provide rigorous, relevant experiences for all children. IB is a framework for instruction that addresses the whole child, and gives us a common language to ensure that students are growing intellectually, socially, and emotionally.
What does this mean for students?
- Your child will be taught the IB Learner Profile characteristics, found here. These are 10 characteristics that make up international mindedness, and these characteristics are at the heart of everything we do. They provide the backbone for our school’s vision and mission, which you can see by clicking here.
- Students will see more and more IB grading rubrics in their classes. Each course has 4 rubrics that provide the foundation for rigorous instruction and assessment.
- Each student should complete 10 hours of community service and document their hours on the form found here. Students can volunteer through an official organization such as Hands on Nashville, or they can document volunteer hours conducted through Girl Scouts or Boy Scouts, a religious organization, household chores, helping neighbors, etc. Any service without pay “counts.” Hours are accepted on a rolling basis, but are due by May 3, 2019. Hours from May 4, 2018 through May 3, 2019 will count. The form can be found by clicking here.
- 8thgraders will complete the IB Community Project with Mr. Kameen and Ms. Bernstein. This is an extended, self-designed service learning project that helps students practice the IB Approaches to Learning, or “soft skills,” like collaboration, self-management, media literacy, etc. This project will inherently fulfill the ten hour community service requirement, so no additional documentation is needed.
