10th annual “state of the word”

 In Community, Featured

Celebrate a decade of voices coming together as one at the 10th Annual State of the Word. For one night only, December 16th at 7pm, the region’s top college and high school writers, poets, emcees, and spoken word artists convene for an unforgettable night of poetry. Students will be given a platform speak their truth and share about the issues that resonant deepest with them. You will walk away from this event inspired and forever changed.

A panel of judges will also select the fourth Nashville Youth Poet Laureate, a program which aims to identify young writers and leaders who are committed to civic and community engagement, diversity and tolerance, and youth voice across Nashville.

This event is executed in collaboration with Vandy Spoken Word and made possible through the generous support of the Blair School of Music, The Martha Rivers Ingram Commons at Vanderbilt, and the Vanderbilt Writing Studio. Performers emerge from Southern Word’s programs sponsored by Metro Nashville Arts Commission, Tennessee Arts Commission, National Endowment for the Arts, Metro Nashville Public Schools, LEAD Public Schools, Memorial Foundation, Humanities Tennessee, Dugas Family Foundation, Nashville Public Library, Nashville Public Library Foundation, Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, Dan and Margaret Maddox Charitable Foundation, and the Nashville Office of Mayor Megan Barry.

Tickets: $10 general admission, $3 students with ID. Proceeds benefit Southern Word and the placement of writer mentors in Middle Tennessee’s public schools.
