Matador girls soccer wins the City Championship!

JT Moore defeated Meigs MS in the City Championship this evening at Father Ryan 1-0!  It was a hard fought match.  Sophie Stein scored, what would be the winning goal, in the 8th minute of the first half.  Sophie battled furiously for a bouncing corner kick from Ellis McDermott and was able to find the back of the net!  Ellis McDermott, Maguire Maestas, and Caroline Kirkby helped press the attack all match.  Meigs parked the bus on defense and Moore just could not find the back of the net for the rest of the match, although there were plenty of opportunities to do so!

Moore dominated possession throughout the match.  The mid-field of Simone Longenecker, Gig Bowman, Maddie Vaughn, and Emerson Knoll hustled all afternoon and did a great job of shutting down Meigs’ main ball-handler, a shifty #3!  If there was an MVP of the match it would have gone to Simone Longenecker!  Simone played her best match of the season and had the center midfield on lock down!  The defense played another stellar match led by Jenny Lott!  Emma Russell was dominant on the left side of the line!  Emery Lewis and Rebecca Sanchez had the center under control all afternoon!  Grace Dyer played an excellent match on the right side!  Meigs played frantically as time wore down.  Meigs received a free kick with 30 seconds left in the match.  The ball was moving into dangerous territory as the seconds ticked away but Rebecca Sanchez stepped up and cleared the ball away to seal the victory for Moore and end any hopes of an equalizing goal for Meigs!

Moore went 14-0 for the third season in a row, outscored their opponents 74 goals to 2 goals, pitched 12 shutouts in 14 matches, and won the very rare three-peat!  The Lady Matadors have eight 8th graders who have won a City Championship all three of the years that they have played on the team!  Moore loses thirteen 8th graders this season and 9 of their starters but is already working on reloading for next season!

Thank you to all of the parents, faculty, and staff who came out and supported the Lady Matadors on a chilly evening at Father Ryan!  And a special thanks to Coach Scott Putney for his dedication and leadership!
