Welcome to the NEW page for the J. T. Moore Wellness Committee!
Our goal is to help our children and their families improve their health and overall wellness. This encompasses topics such as nutrition, smoking, exercise, self esteem, alcohol and more…all of which impact our health and general well being.
Please visit this area often to see what’s happening with our nutrition action team, the new family garden club and so much more for the 2010-2011 school year.
We have an amazing group of parents who are working very hard to educate our kids about healthier options and to provide those choices in the school. This is especially important for children who rely on the school meals as their main source of nutrition. This kind of change takes time, and a LOT of parental support. If you want to join us in creating a healthier J T Moore, please contact collynwainwright@mac.com.
J.T. Moore Nutrition Action Committee
Goal: To promote a culture of health and wellness at JTMoore using the MNPS wellness policy as a guideline.
Action Plan
- Promote awareness of how food and activity choices affect overall health and academic performance.
- Encourage faculty to use alternatives to sodas and candy as rewards for academic, behavioral or athletic success.
- Research and implement healthier food alternatives in PTO sponsored events, such as school parties and intramural sports concessions.
- Promote and encourage healthy food choices in the school environment, via programs like Julia Green’s “Healthy Snack Cart”
- Form a “Student Nutrition Action Committee” (SNAC) to involve students in the processes.
- Participate in health education events such as the Hillsboro Cluster “Nutrition Fair” on May 1, 9:00 – 1:00 at Carter Lawrence Elementary School.
- Start a school garden program.
For more information about the Action Plan, contact Ginger Sands at 221-0841 laughingsun@comcast.net
How can you help implement the action plan?
One of the most important components of this plan is offering alternative, non-food incentives for our children. Teachers can implement these easily in the form of Positive Behavior Support tickets for the PBS Store. The PBS Store ALWAYS needs items and volunteers.
Explanation of alternative incentives, and ideas for items needed can be downloaded by clicking here.
For more information about PBS, to make a donation or to volunteer, please contact Nichole Lehmann at thelehmanns@comcast.net.
