The 2009 Lady Matador Soccer team had an up and down season this year. With only 6 returning players this season and a new crop of 7th graders, the girls had to get used to playing with one another.
The season started out great with our 1st win against Wright Middle 5-0. Our 2nd game against Bellevue went into double overtime and we lost by a score of 3-4. The game was intense and the girls played their hearts out. The next game against West End was another win with a score of 4-0 which left us 2 games before playoffs started. HG Hill was no match for us, the girls took that game to another level winning 14-0. With the regular season ending, we had our toughest match-up yet against MLK. The girls played their hardest but unfortunately came out with another loss of 3-0. Our first round of district had us traveling to Marshall. That game was the most intense game of the season. We scored early on and then shortly there after Marshall came back with a shot. By halftime the score was 1-1 and at the end of regulation time no one else had scored. We went into double overtime with still no score, which had us taking penalty kicks. It was a very intense game but we came out ahead and won 3-1. We ended up playing MLK again that Monday after the Marshall game in the district and lost 4-0, which put us buying for 3rd and 4th place with Wright Middle for the city. With several of our key players missing we lost to Wright 3-1 putting us in 4th place in the district. We play Meigs on Friday October 9, 2009. If we win we advance, if we lose we are eliminated and the season is over.
The girls have done an outstanding job this season and I am very proud of them. Thanks to captain Madelyn McCauley and co-captain Mattie Crenshaw for their hard work and leadership with the team. I want to thank the girls for letting me coach them in a sport that I am very passionate about and for the parents, faculty, and students for coming and supporting us. What a great 2009 season and I look forward to next year.
